Due to limited space, and cooling, and in view of the fact that Raru are inviting me to be an affiliate I have elected to rather host my site properly. Now, this is an account of why I went with Afrihost eventually.
Initially I thought, OK, let's get two hosting packages with my ISP, Vox Telecom. I duly did this, and when I asked them to take care of the domains i.e. transfer them, that's when the pain started.
First of all they did not understand why I wanted to transfer the domains in. The reason why was to save a few bucks on renewal, not to have to deal with ZACR, and to get my WHOIS purged of all personal information, because I have established that someone is using the WHOIS to get my home address to effect burglaries.
So I order two hosting packages, and guess what, I cannot get the domains transferred to them because they haven't created the DNS zone files. So I ask them again what they want me to do... still no answer. I then decide, OK, if these guys are idiots, let's modify the A record on my current DNS hosting provider, and point it to the box, seeing that Vox gave me the IP addresses. It worked, for, like 20 minutes, then I saw someone else's website. Then it went down, then it stopped working.
So I thought, screw this crap, and I approached Afrihost. By 5pm on Friday afternoon, the hosting was set up, the domain was being transferred. I get a text on Saturday afternoon the domain transfer is done, and I then went to check the site and found it to be up and running.
What I am also pleased about is the fact that the WHOIS is now purged of all my personally identifiable information. This means, no more risk to me and these bastards out there who think its cool to use my WHOIS to find a house to break into, can get stuffed.
